Wine Songs, premiered by Choral Chameleon in March 2012, earned praise for Gregorio’s compositional voice in an examiner.com review by Seth Gilman. Gilman writes, “Overall, the effect of this set was of an admirable compositional restraint and parsimony. What Mr. Gregorio had to say in conceit and material was said with specificity, brevity, and wit; nothing was obscured by the temptation of a lesser composer to satisfy too many perceived priorities or impulses.”
Look back on time with kindly eyes was praised by Lauren Alfano, writing for icareifyoulisten.com, as a “particularly exciting” piece on Choral Chameleon‘s November 2011 concert, Tempus.
Out the window (from Two Meditations) received a very nice review by Thomas Deneuville. Deneuville describes the piece as “a beautiful landscape in sfumato.”
Set me as a seal
Released in E.C. Schirmer’s Fall 2010 New Issue, Set me as a seal received three excellent reviews. It was described by Alan Lewis in the March 2011 issue of the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians as a “lovely setting of this time-honored wedding text.” It was also selected one of Creator Magazine’s “Select 20″ anthems of 2011, praised there as “simply put, gorgeous…”. The Winter 2010-11 issue of The Choral Room likewise hailed it as “the perfect cathedral anthem….Gregorio sets this popular text…with great effect.”
A Christmas Diptych, released in E.C. Schirmer’s Spring 2008 New Issue, was chosen as one of Creator Magazine’s 2009 “Select 20″ anthems.
Dona nobis pacem
Released in E.C. Schirmer’s Fall 2007 New Issue, Dona nobis pacem received four very favorable reviews:
• one by Gregory Hall in the journal of the Contemporary Record Society (full review reprinted here about halfway down the page):
“[...] Gregorio approaches his task with the intelligence and integrity of a pre-twentieth-century composer. His is largely instinctual music; while beautifully crafted, it has nothing of the contrived about it. Its consistency as well, in an era of eclecticism that touches all music, is most admirable. [...] His feeling for modal diatonic harmony is completely natural…and because consonance and dissonance are in many ways unified in this work, Gregorio points us graciously towards new realms of harmonic development.”
• one by Alan Lewis in the November 2007 issue of the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians:
“In a year when peace seems ever-more elusive, an ambitious setting of the three words, ‘Dona nobis pacem’ by the young composer Joseph Gregorio is particularly appealing. [...] Even in its mixed-voices version, the piece conjures up for me overtones of the Biebl Ave Maria; the harmony is lush, the lines elegant, the overarching shape (gradual growth from low and quiet to very high and very loud, then a brief dying-away) clear. [...]”
• one in the November 2008 issue of Creator Magazine, which chose Dona nobis pacem as one of its 2008 “Select 20″ anthems:
“What a great piece of choral music. [...] a wonderful addition to the repertoire. Well done. Highly recommended.”
• and a review in the Winter 2007-08 issue of The Choral Room.
